CHANDIGARH: Panjab University (PU)’s senior senator, former Advocate General and ex-MLA of Punjab, Gopal Krishan Chatrath, passed away on Friday morning. He was 83.
Chatrath had been hospitalised at a private hospital in Mohali after developing complications following a heart bypass surgery on July 7.
Besides being a PU dean, senator and syndicate member, Chatrath had also been president of the High Court Bar association.
He was often called the 'bhishm pitamah' of the university, being an active member of its senate.
During a condolence meeting held at PU on Friday afternoon, PU VC Arun Kumar Grover said that it was impossible to think of him as no more.
Former MP Satya Pal Jain condoled the demise and said Chatrath was like "Bhisham Pitamah" for PU. "It's sad news," he texted the PU VC from Allahabad.
Senator Raghubir Dayal said it was the end of an era and his immense contribution (to PU) will definitely be missed.
